Food Find: Bananas

Thanks to Chiyo P. for asking about bananas in this post...
I bought this box of organic bananas from Jimbos for 89 cents/lb on Thursday, Jan. 17th. A full box is 38lbs but I only bought 27 lbs. That extra 11 lbs equals way more bananas than we can handle (eating and freezing). I don't think monkeys even eat that many bananas. This box had 10 bunches, which came out to 66 bananas. Two of the bunches had EIGHT bananas!
The bananas were still slightly green in the store and are now a nice yellow, but we will just leave them out until they fully ripen. Once they get nice and spotty, we'll peel them and put them in the freezer for green smoothies. Bananas are essential for green smoothies!
The last time we bought a box of bananas was in November so this amount of bananas seems to last us about two months.
Now if you do a price comparison, organic bananas at Trader Joe's (29 cents EACH) are a better deal but I have had bad luck with their bananas. They are always way too green in the store and never fully ripen up, which is a total waste of money.
Also, Vons sells organic bananas cheaper at 79 cents/lb but I heard recently that the plastic they put on bananas stems is used because they dip the whole thing in fungicide. Um hello, even ORGANIC bananas. So yeah, I am totally boycotting Del Monte and Dole "organic" bananas.
The bananas from Jimbos are sourced from GROW and they do not have plastic on their bananas at all (which is also nice for reducing carbon footprint!). I sent them an email to see if they know more about plastic on stems:

Hello!
Thank you for growing such wonderful bananas. I've noticed that your organic bananas do not come with plastic around the stems. Do you know why other companies use this for their organic bananas? Or rather, why do you not use them?

Thank you!

Impressive quick response!

Hello,
Thank you for supporting our bananas. They use plastic with fungicides to protect against crown rot.  We use ozone water which gets rid of bacteria.

So there you have it. Fungicides on "organic" bananas. Although now I wonder if they just dip the stems in fungicide instead of the whole bunch. In any case, it's still chemicals.

Well, I like buying the GROW box because I can keep them in there until they ripen. Before I used to lay out all the bananas on the dining room floor, and have to keep turning the bananas over every few days to check for bruises. But with the box, I can position the bananas so that they aren't laying on their sides.
Once the bananas are ready for freezing, I'll post another pic!

    1. I know! Makes you wonder how many other companies are getting away with using chemicals on produce that the USDA is still signing off as organic...
